Group Therapy - Frequently Asked Questions
How do you know if you could benefit from a therapeutic group?
If you would like to have a clearer understanding of how you interact in the presence of others, want more insight on how you impact others and how your are perceived, then a therapeutic group may be for you. For some people groups are a more effective way of approaching issues because of the multiple points of views and group dynamics.
What is the difference between a support group and a therapeutic group?
A support group does not have a therapist and often is support/ educational in nature. Often the goal is not to work on deep inner issues. Group therapy is designed to illicit deeply held struggles and difficulties and creates a better understanding and insight so that alternate behaviors, beliefs and stories can emerge and be practiced in the group setting.
Is the group confidential?
This is a key element in group work and every member makes a commitment to confidentiality within the group walls.
What kinds of issues should I work on?
Most issues are “fair game” and you chose what you want to disclose. The group can be a very safe environment to explore “issues” and “problems”.
If I am in individual psychotherapy, can I be in a group too?
Yes, often the group process and individual therapy compliment each other.
